A copyright is used to denote legal ownership of creative or intellectual materials. Examples of copyrighted materials are creative and technical writing, graphic designs, and figurines. Individuals and companies copyright their materials to prohibit someone from taking their hard earned work without acknowledging and compensating the true owner. It is important to respect copyrights as they represent material that has taken a great deal of thought and effort to produce for your enjoyment or education.

Kansas County Historic Maps. The maps of Jewell County and Smith County are digitized versions of ones that appeared in History of Kansas, Noble Prentis (Winfield: E.P. Greer, 1899). The maps were prepared for the web by John Howell and are used with permission. (See http://www.kotn.org.)

Nebraska County Historic Maps. The maps of Butler, Fillmore, Gage, Jefferson, Polk, Richardson, Saline, Seward, Thayer, and York counties are digitized versions of Engineers Official Map of Nebraska (circa 1925). In an effort to disseminate information on BVCA Partnership, its programs and services, the corporation allows individuals to download or reproduce information that is the sole copyright of Blue Valley Community Action Inc. for any personal or nonprofit use. Such materials must be used in concert with our stated mission, promise and principles (see Who We Are) and must carry the following notice:

This includes, but is not limited to incorporating or using our information in conjunction with materials that are obscene or pornographic, degrading, disparaging, or libelous to BVCA Partnership or others.

Companies use trademarks to distinguish their goods and services from those of a competitor. When graphic designs or creative names are used to represent a particular good or service, they become a trademark. Example, there are a lot of different facial tissues, but only one brand is a Kleenex®.
